The Western Screech Owl (Megascops kennicottii) is found in the western part of the North American continent. The species name kennicotti was created to honour Robert Kennicott, an American explorer and naturalist (1835-1866). Despite its name the Western Screech Owl rarely emits a screech. The males emit a soft "hoo hoo" call during the mating and nesting season.
